Since electronic cigarettes have practically existed, we have always wondered if they are safe or not and they have never convinced. Now a new research throws more fuel on the fire: in e-cig a new chemical substance, so far not classified and that does not appear among the ingredients, would be dangerous for the respiratory tract.

Electronic cigarettes are increasingly popular with young people, driven by the wide range of flavors available, often created using flavoring aldehydes. The objective of this study was precisely to examine whether aromatic aldehydes remain stable in e-cigarette liquids or if they undergo chemical reactions, forming new chemical species that can cause harm to those who use the e-cig. It would be these same aromas, mixed with the substances present in the cigarette, to represent a threat.

Thus, the Duke University researchers have identified the "formation" of the new compound from the solvents and the various flavors used in the cigarettes.

“Consumers don't have a clue what they are exposing themselves to when they vape. Even if the alleged ingredients are written on the e-cigs, ”warns Sven Jordt, professor of pharmacology and one of the authors of the study.

Electronic cigarettes, therefore, not only produce more formaldehyde than traditional ones, but also other ingredients that our body cannot bear.

Basically, electronic cigarettes work by heating a liquid called e-juice, which is the result of various flavors, glycol propylene, glycerin and often nicotine. All of this is then heated and vaporized. And it is in the vaporization process that the compound called "PG aldehyde acetal”, Which reaches the respiratory tract and which it may have unexpected toxicological effects. But precisely because the compound is not found among the basic ingredients, but is formed during vaporization, which is not mentioned on the label.

"The new chemical identified - he explained - irritates the nerve endings of the throat, creates chronic inflammation and this can lead to asthma and emphysema", conclude the researchers.

One more reason to also eliminate electronic cigarettes from their habits of life, also because it is clear that not even they are able to take away the habit of smoking.
