Dry brushing: what it is

Dry brushing is a classic Ayurvedic ritual, which involves brushing the whole body with a special natural bristle tool. THE benefits they are often sung anecdotally. Hence, many of the claims about this treatment, which helps reduce cellulite or even improve immune system function, should be studied and analyzed by science. However, there are indeed a few benefits for the skin:

  • polishes the skin: dry brushing is an effective one exfoliating, which means it removes dead cells from the top layer of the skin, improving its appearance and making the following topical treatments more effective.
  • can promote circulation: the lymphatic drainage and circulation are among the best known benefits of this ritual. The lymphatic system has been shown to work together with the circulatory system to remove waste from the body, which is why some consider dry brushing as a "detoxifying" method. It is questionable whether it is actually necessary to manually stimulate circulation (some studies show that lymph pumps can improve lymphatic function) or if simply moving the body is enough. Regardless, the studies show that improved circulation improves the overall appearance of the skin.
  • it is a moment of self-care: dry brushing is a way to take care of your body, a moment to focus on your well-being; and feeling good about your body is always a goal worth achieving.

How to dry brushing

Here is a step by step guide to your favorite Ayurvedic ritual.

Find your brush

The first thing to do is to find the perfect brush. Most people recommend using one brush with natural or synthetic bristles. As for the grip and the handle, it all depends on personal tastes; for example, many people prefer models with a handle that is long enough to reach even the most difficult places, such as the back.

For advanced dry brushes, you can also find options with Ionic copper fibers, which supposedly help detoxify the body even more, but can be too harsh, especially, for beginners.

Prepared

Once you've found the brush that best suits your needs, it's time to get ready. You will have to be completely naked; it is best to do this before washing, as you will be lifting dead skin cells. Therefore, we recommend that you carry out your treatment already in the shower.

The movement

For the movement proceed by making one medium pressure, so as not to irritate the skin. We recommend that you do each step more than once, and overlap the sections when brushing. Along curves (such as joints) or smaller areas, you will switch to shorter, faster movements.

Start at the feet and work your way up

The purpose of dry brushing is encourage lymph towards the upper torso and chest, where the lymphatic fluid will re-enter the bloodstream: you must always follow the circulatory system.

Then, start with the top of your feet, then work your way up to the lower leg, knee, and thigh. When working on the back of the thigh, consider the butt as an extension of the thigh and continue upward on the lower back. As for the stomach, some recommend making circular movements because it is thought that help digestion but there is no scientific evidence that this is the case.

Treat the upper body

Just as you start with the feet, start with the hands and move towards the heart. Do a routine similar to the one you did with the legs: brush the backs of your hands, work around the forearm and then around the upper arm. Be careful to treat your upper arms more carefully, as that is where many are located lymph nodes (as a general rule, you will always have to pay attention to areas with lymph nodes).

Finish with neck and décolleté

Here you will have to be gentler, as the skin is more delicate. Also, here you need to deviate from the bottom-up technique, as you are above the level of the heart. Start, from the jaw and work your way down to the chest. Finish by passing over the heart in a circular motion to finish the treatment.

Take a shower

After you have finished your treatment, proceed with the shower; this will help cleanse the body of dead cells, which have fallen off during the brushing process. Now that the skin is completely exfoliate, pay attention to how you wash it: avoid scrubs and abrasive products.

After a shower, hydration is key

Remember to moisturize the skin immediately after showering, as it will absorb the cream more easily. It is important to use high quality products, preferably organic, after dry brushing sessions. Do this while your skin is moist, as the oil or cream will be absorbed much more quickly. The result? It will be soft, smooth and deeply hydrated skin.
