Drinking water: 5 reasons why water resources are running out

The planet's water resources are running out. We are referring above all to sources and basins of fresh water, which unfortunately in the world are in danger due to the reckless exploitation of water and pollution.

Le water resources of the Planet are running out. We refer mainly to sources and basins of fresh water, which unfortunately in the world are in danger due to the reckless exploitation of water and pollution.

Climate change, global warming and drought are also endangering our water resources, so much so that in recent years numerous lakes in the world they have almost dried up, forcing local populations to migrate elsewhere to have drinking water available.

Here are the main reasons for the progressive depletion of water resources of the Planet.

Index

Groundwater

According to one study conducted by the University of California and reported by NASA, between 2003 and 2013 as many as 13 of the 37 largest aquifers on the planet showed serious signs of exhaustion. Most of the time they don't get water to restore themselves. Eight of them are in a risk category according to which they are not reached by any natural supply to compensate for their use. According to experts, we are consuming groundwater resources very quickly without knowing when they will really run out. The water system most at risk is that ofSaudi Arabia, on which 60 million people depend.

Unmotivated water waste

In wealthy countries it is normal to have running water available in every home. Unfortunately, this precious asset is so taken for granted that it leads to truly unmotivated waste. 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water but only 2,5% is made up of fresh water. Alone 1% of fresh water reserves of the Planet at the moment would be available for consumption. Yet humanity is exploiting them relentlessly for pure economic interest and does not pay much attention to domestic water waste. For example, when we brush our teeth, if we let the water run we risk wasting up to 7 liters.

Pollution

Pollution drastically worsens the quality of the water resources we have available on our planet. In Russia the Lake Baikal it represents the largest freshwater reservoir in the world but unfortunately it is contaminated by waste water discharges in which pathogens have been detected. Lake Baikal contains 20% of the fresh water of the entire planet and 80% of Russia alone. After the Second World War, this lake has suffered the worrying effects of chemical and physical pollution of industrial origin and the remediation interventions only began in the XNUMXs.

Usurpation of the waters

The water basins are usurped every year by the necessities of maritime, air and land transport. They also continue construction and use of underwater pipes, such as i gas pipelines, for the transport of oil, gas, agro-industrial products and biofuels. Their extraction and transport increasingly pollute land and water, in a situation of over-exploitation.

Human activities

Human activities pollute and deplete freshwater resources. Freshwater ecosystems are the habitat of over 40% of the fish species in the world. According to National Geographic, fish and marine animals are suffering severe damage from humans, so much so that more than 20% of species of freshwater fish known have become extinct or have been threatened in recent decades.
