Milk has long been recommended by doctors and nutritionists to increase thecalcium intake and help keep bones strong. But new research from the University of Uppsala, Sweden, published in the British Medical Journal, would indicate that this is not quite the way things are.

The study tracked 61.000 women and 45.000 men for 20 years and found that there was no reduction in fractures for those who consumed milk in their lifetime. Indeed, consumption of the food in women has been associated with an increased likelihood of suffering a fracture. Those who drank three glasses or more per day (680ml) were twice as likely to die early as those who consumed less than one.

The lead author of the study, Professor Karl Michaelsson, he explains:

“Our results may cast doubt on the validity of the recommendations on consuming high amounts of milk to prevent fragility fractures. Higher milk consumption in women and men is not accompanied by a lower risk of fracture. Instead it may be associated with a higher death rate ”.

It is not the first time, actually. that a research comes to these results. The reason? Given the high lactose content of milk, it is speculated that high milk consumption can increase inflammation and oxidative stress, which in turn affects the risk of mortality and fractures. This association was also observed with the intake of cheese, we read in the research, which in any case advises caution in interpreting the results.

To consider cow's milk a harmful food for our body, as "Specific species" therefore not suitable for humans but only for calves, she had also been the clinical nutritionist Marie Antoinette Giufré, who to our microphones explained like the milk of other mammals is an indigestible food for our body as rennin and lactase, enzymes capable of digesting milk proteins, are no longer present.

In the interview with the expert, reference is made to the studies reported in particular in the book The China Study, by T. Collin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell, in which it is argued that casein, which our body is unable to digest and assimilate, it is a very dangerous substance for humans and it can also lead to serious problems. Unfortunately, the issue is controversial and the interests at stake are so many. And all this without considering the environmental and ethical aspects linked to the production of this food.
