Dozens of malnourished, abused and dead puppies in a shed, horror in the province of Enna

Sicilian accumulator kept dozens of dogs in a state of total decay in a shed. 140 specimens saved, including 60 puppies

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Shock in Cerami, in the province of Enna. When they set foot inside a shed, the Sicilian volunteers of theENPA (National Animal Protection Authority) found themselves faced with a gruesome scenario: dead puppies found on the ground in the mud, malnourished and abused dogs, left to tear apart each other. But the horror doesn't stop there. The poor dogs were forced to live (or rather to survive) in the midst of cow manure.

After the opening of Pandora's box, a vast operation coordinated by the national program Rete Solidale di Enpa immediately began, involving various Sections of Animal Protection in Sicily to recover the animals as soon as possible and submit them to veterinary visits as soon as possible. In total 140 dogs have been rescued, including sixty puppies. At least for them there was a happy ending. Fortunately, ENPA has already found accommodation for them and many dogs have been sterilized, including twenty-five bitches who are now being followed by dog trainers. The males, on the other hand, were transferred to animal shelters.

First we took away the mothers with the puppies and the females about to give birth. We are talking about over 60 puppies cared for and put in a position to be adopted who today have almost all found a new home. - says Paola Tintori, Enpa national treasurer and head of Rete Solidale Enpa, who coordinated the operations - Our veterinary ambulance went directly to Cerami with Dr. Meir Levy, Enpa veterinarian, to assess the health of the dogs and intervene promptly. We have identified shelters that could accommodate them once they have been treated and re-established. A local veterinarian we contacted made himself available to sterilize some dogs and to make spaces available for the post-operative hospitalization.

Yet another case of animal hoarding

The one just discovered in Sicily is just the umpteenth story that sees a protagonist serial accumulator.

The phenomenon of animal hoarding is much more common than you think. The National Animal Protection Authority receives at least two reports of these cases every month. - explains Carla Rocchi, National President of ENPA - There is a common denominator behind the many stories of animal accumulation: discomfort, degradation, a social scourge that unfortunately also overwhelms the animals that become victims of it. Often these are situations that remain in the shadows for years because they concern social conditions of extreme degradation, loneliness. Many times they are discovered only after death. Acting as soon as possible is essential. They are animals that experience incredible deprivation, often suffer from hunger and cannot be followed. We take care of them, we take care of them and in the few cases that require it we also act legally.

Hoarders ("serial accumulators") can accumulate, in fact, not only objects but also animals, of any species and without a precise criterion. In this case we speak of Noah's syndrome.

The initial motivation is always to satisfy one's own intimate need to live with these animals, while the second but no less important is to collect them to cure them, with the idea of being the only ones able to help them. - the Carabinieri clarify - A laudable intention which however remains such, plunging those who should be the recipients of protection into a spiral of deprivation and mistreatment, which can range from the lack of food and care to the restriction in narrow spaces, from life in deplorable hygienic conditions to death which can occur due to starvation or lack of adequate assistance.

In the face of dramatic cases like these, never turn your gaze elsewhere: report to the associations that deal with the protection of animals and report it to the police!
