What is the glycemic index: let's be clear

Glycemia (glycemic index) represents the level of sugars present in our blood. This value, expressed in milligrams per deciliter, is not fixed, but varies according to the time of day, food intake, physical activity practiced: for example, upon waking up or before meals it will be lower than if measured some hour after eating. We speak yes high blood sugar (or also called hyperglycemia) when the concentration of glucose in the blood is too high, and the body is unable to assimilate sugars and transform them into energy. Here is a summary of the glucose levels you should be concerned about:

If you experience episodes of hyperglycemia regularly, it is important to contact your doctor as lifestyle or medication changes may be required to keep your blood sugar close to normal.

High blood sugar: the symptoms not to be underestimated

Diabetes is an insidious disease, because it often has no obvious symptoms - which is why identifying it can be difficult: sometimes the obvious symptoms appear when the disease has already been present for years. We must pay attention to small signals that our body sends us, which should not be underestimated because they could prove to be fundamental in an early diagnosis:

  • Thirst and need to drink frequently (polydipsia)
  • Dry mouth and throat
  • Increased diuresis (polydiuria), especially at night;
  • Chronic fatigue and blurred vision;
  • Skin inflammation: itching, dryness, skin dehydration;
  • Unjustified weight loss
  • Increased appetite;
  • Abdominal pain
  • Repeated infections, such as bladder infections (cystitis) and skin infections.
Can hyperglycemia be prevented?

Assuming that, in the case of high glycemic values, it is essential to consult your GP (and, possibly, start medical therapy on his advice), there are healthy habits that can lower the level of sugars in our blood and allow us to remove the risk of diabetes.

  • Keep moving. A simple brisk walk (about 20-30 minutes) every day is enough to reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes by 60%.
  • Pay attention to the diet. A diet rich in saturated fats (such as those found in processed meats and cheeses) contributes to the development of hyperglycemia and diabetes. Attention also to sweets, sugary drinks and baked goods made with refined flours.
  • Frequent checks. Just add the blood glucose measurement to the blood tests we do periodically in the laboratory to monitor it and avoid the risk of running into the disease of diabetes.
