Il celery (Apium graveolens) is a vegetable belonging to the family of umbelliferae, commonly used in the kitchen for the preparation of soups, salads and numerous hot and cold dishes. Celery can easily be grown on your own garden, or simply in pot, not only starting from the seeds, but also from one of the parts usually considered as waste: the base of its stem.





Just as it is possible grow onions starting from the conservation of their base or cultivating lettuce starting from the scraps, this option is also indicated in the case of celery. Celery is, in fact, a vegetable that can germinate and regrow easily from its own stalk.

If you want to try your hand at this experiment, remember to keep the base of a celery stalkinstead of throwing it away in order to repeatedly have fresh celery at no cost: by keeping and planting more bases of the stalks, the celery harvest in the garden can take place on a regular and frequent basis.

The experiment also works with celery bought at the supermarket, but it would be absolutely better to choose some organic celery and coming directly from the farmer's market or from the garden of friends and acquaintances: celery, in fact, represents one of the vegetables in which the greatest presence of pesticide residues.

  1. First of all, with the help of a knife, you will have to separate the base from the rest of the celery stalks, calculating a thickness of about 5 centimeters.
  2. The base should be placed inside a deep plate, bowl or large glass filled with water. You will notice a central yellow area, which you will need to keep under observation to verify that the first sprout comes out.
  3. In the lower part, however, the roots will have to develop. After a week or so, the first shoots will begin to appear.

Where to place the sprouted celery

The sprouted celery stalk should be placed in a bright place inside the house. It can also be placed outdoors, but not in direct light of the sun.

In case the temperatures still do not allow it, it is possible to repair the celery from the cold using a miniserra. The spring months and the autumn months are the most suitable time to conduct the experiment outdoors.

Potted transplant

When some leaves have already sprouted and the first roots have formed, you can move on to transplant in pot, choosing organic soil to which preferably add homemade compost.


Celery does not like direct sun, excessively high temperatures and drought. Therefore, water the plant regularly and check that the surface of the soil is slightly damp every day.

Collect the celery a little at a time, so that you can allow the new leaves and new stems to grow back. You can place your celery pot on the balcony or in one bright area of ​​the house, in the absence of a vegetable garden or a garden.
