Domestic cats, forbidden to go out: in the end, Australia really put in place a curfew

Domestic cats, forbidden to go out: in the end, Australia really put in place a curfew

The country has decided to ban cat owners from letting their feline circulate outside with strict new rules. The reason is to protect the Australian wild animals that often end up under the claws of cats and perish. The measure is preventive

In some Australian territories such as the Australian Capital Territory, the authorities have introduced a plan - the ACT Cat Plan 2021-31 - which proposes strategies for responsible management of domestic cats and to protect wildlife from predation by these.

The new regulation will come into force from 1 June 2022 and will prevent Australian pet cats from leaving the home and wandering around the neighborhood undisturbed. Felines are predators by nature and would have caused considerable damage to the native fauna, killing millions of wild animals in the country over the years. A very relevant problem that required an urgent control measure.

It is estimated that each year, Canberra-owned cats alone prey on 61.000 native birds, 2.000 native mammals, 30.000 native reptiles and 6.000 native frogs. In the State to which the city belongs, 17 areas have also been identified in which the fauna is at risk, which are indicated by specific indications.

The new rules imply that felines must always be kept indoors or in the garden in special safe structures such as the catio that allow them to enjoy the air outdoors, without being able to move away from the building. The law provides for penalties of up to $ 1.600 for each transgression.

In some districts of other Australian federal states such as South Australia's Mount Barker, the municipality had already opted for a curfew from 20 to 7 in the morning. (Read also: Mount Barker, the city that instituted a curfew for cats)

All the measures of the Australian Government aim to promote a proper management of domestic cats that for this purpose the "Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife" initiative was also launched which, in collaboration with Zoo Victoria and the RSPCA Victoria, has created an online community where cat owners can exchange information, receive updates on current regulations and receive expert advice.

The goal is to let your cats live peacefully inside the house, protect them from external dangers and in turn prevent animals from causing damage to the environment and its living beings, trespassing into vulnerable areas.

After all, allowing a cat to explore the neighborhood presupposes expose the animal to high risks: cars, bicycles, toxic plants, but also cliffs or simple places like garages where the animal could be trapped.
