But what could have happened to these animals to make their fur change color?

As strays have been spotted near the Dzerzhinskoye Orgsteklo plant, which was once a large chemical manufacturing plant producing hydrogen cyanide and plexiglass (now disused), their strange coloring is believed to have been caused by some chemical waste present in the area.

In particular, to turn their fur towards the blue could have been the copper sulfate the dogs would come into contact with.

The authorities of the city of Dzerzhinsk now intend to catch the dogs for a medical check-up to assess their health and understand the real reasons why they have turned blue.

A similar episode has already occurred in Mumbai in 2017, when some stray dogs had turned blue near the industrial area of Taloja. Even in that case the fault had been some polluting waste.
