Dogs and cats forgotten in the emergency: animal rights activists are asking for the release of adoptions

Coronavirus has blocked the adoptions of dogs and cats: associations ask that they can resume to avoid overcrowding in kennels and catteries

Stopping an entire country for almost two months is a difficult undertaking, both for those who have to make this decision and for those who live on their own skin. consequences of the lockdown.

Staying at home to overcome the health emergency is in fact bringing many people into the open small and large social and economic emergencies and it is putting many realities in serious difficulty.

These also include the activities of kennels and catteries that to avoid travel as much as possible have reduced or even blocked animal adoptions leading to overcrowding of facilities.

Thus, various animal welfare associations including LAV and OIPA have addressed a letter to the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Health and the Director General of Animal Health so that the Government allows resume adoption procedures as soon as possible of dogs and cats crammed into the structures.

"A month and a half after the first measures, the loading of animals in public and private structures has gone beyond any already heavy budget recorded in periods of normal activity - over one hundred thousand dogs a year in the registered kennels alone and dozens of thousands of cats ”write the signatory associations.

Kennels and catteries play an important role in the fight against stray animals, as they remove animals from the streets and allow great economic savings for everyone, but they must be able to ensure well-being and resources for all their guests and this is very complicated if the number of animals exceeds the capacity of the structure.

According to the associations, during the lockdown many people realized the importance of having a pet in order to have company and comfort, but before giving an animal up for adoption, the volunteers of kennels and catteries must carry out pre-assignment checks at the families who will welcome them, so as to be able to evaluate in which context the animal will live.

Out of compliance with the decrees and ordinances of the last few weeks, all these activities have been greatly slowed down or suspended altogether.

Now the associations they ask the government to be able to resume the adoption of dogs and cats as already happened in France since last April 16, clearly respecting the safety rules imposed by the emergency,
