There are many elements to pay attention to before starting a washing cycle in the washing machine: the combination of fabrics and colors inside the drum, the proper functioning of the water filter, the use of the right detergent, the choice of more ideal program for the garments we are washing and so on. However, there is a detail to which perhaps not much attention is paid, but which can make the difference for the good condition of our garments: the hinges.

In plastic or metal, zippers are elements present in many garments - from the sportiest ones like sweatshirts or jeans, to the more elegant ones like skirts or dresses. To prevent the "teeth" of the zipper from getting entangled in other fabrics and end up damaging them, we always recommend closing all the hinges before starting the washing machine.

Also pay attention to other types of closures, such as hooks or velcro tears: if left open, these too can damage the fabrics of the other items in the washing machine drum. In particular, the velcro can get caught in the threads of the fabric weft, pulling them and causing unsightly "stretch marks", while the hooks can catch a flap of fabric and make a real hole.

On the contrary, the buttons should never be closed before washing - neither the classic nor the pressure ones. The movement of the laundry during washing would end up stretching the buttoned fabric excessively, with the risk that the buttons "jump". The snaps (to be clear, those found on children's clothing or on some jeans) can come off very easily if they remain closed during washing.
