Here are the "grandmother's tricks" to dry (without foul-smelling surprises) clothes at home, with the help of heaters

In winter, with cold temperatures and frequent rains, it is practically impossible to dry clothes by hanging them out on the balcony. Precisely because it is cold, it is customary to wash sweaters and other heavy clothing, which absorb a lot of water, which ends up stagnating and giving life to bad smells. Not to mention the smell of burning spread in the air and coming from fireplaces and heating systems, which ends up right on the clothes. This is why many people prefer to "hang" the clothes on the radiators in the house when they are on: in this way they will dry faster and will not absorb the smell of smoke from the outside.

However, it is not uncommon for the clothes we have dried on the radiator to also smell bad. But what does it depend on? Good perfumed laundry start with a good wash in the washing machine, for this reason it is very important to take care of our appliance and keep it as efficient as possible: often the bad smell of the clothes forms right in the drum, due to the molds that can accumulate in the various parts of the washing machine. First of all, when washing clothes in the washing machine, it is good not to overdo it, neither with the laundry to be washed (if you put too many items in the drum you risk that they will not be washed well) nor with detergent products (too much detergent will have difficulty dissolving and to be rinsed away, leaving an unpleasant smell on our garments).

A tip to prevent bad smells, then, is to always leave the door of the washing machine slightly open when the appliance is not in operation - in this way you will avoid the stagnation of liquids; moreover, when the washing machine is at rest, we can insert a tray with bicarbonate that absorbs odors in the drum (we can also add a few drops of essential oil of our choice to the powder to perfume). After washing our clothes well, it is important do not let too much time pass before spreading them out: the water would stagnate too much in the fibers of the fabrics, giving rise to an unpleasant odor. If we want to dry the laundry on the radiator, it should not be excessively wet, but only a little damp, to avoid an excessive stagnation of water that can give rise to mold and bad smells: maybe we could hang our clothes on the drying rack in the open air and then finish drying on the radiator. Furthermore, it would be advisable not to put the garments in direct contact with the metal of the radiator: the ideal would be to have a small clothesline to hang on the radiator to avoid direct contact.

Finally, it is good to remember that water retained by wet laundry releases moisture in the room and this can lead to the formation of bad smells. How can we avoid this risk? We can keep the window of the room open a little with the clothes to dry, in order to facilitate the passage of air, or place bowls full of rice or coarse salt in the corners of the room, which will absorb excess moisture.
