5 fantastic creative recycling ideas to inspire you to create impressive Christmas decorations

To give to this Christmas a sense that is as ecological as possible, in the name of respect for the environment, we could try to commit ourselves not to let ourselves be carried away by consumerist temptations, dedicating ourselves rather to recovery, recycling and saving. A commitment that can also apply to decorations, ornaments and decorations for the tree, for the packaging of gifts and for the furnishings of our homes.

Before rushing to buy colored lights or stars and sparkling objects, often expensive and unsustainable, we try to look in the bottom of our wardrobes and our dressers, or in attics and closets, and, with what we find, we try to give our houses an eco-festive look. A little free time and a good dose of imagination are enough to aim for do-it-yourself, in order to avoid spray colors, fake snow and ornaments in plastic or synthetic materials.

Here for example 5 solutions rather simple to decorate the house, set tables and gift boxes while respecting the environment.

Salt dough decorations

A classic is represented by the salt dough, which allows you to make personalized and very low cost decorations, to hang on the tree or to use to decorate chandeliers, furniture and so on. A short time and very few ingredients are enough to create your works (flour and salt in equal quantities and then water, seed oil and glue for the dough and watercolors to color and decorate).

After working the dough with your hands, shape and cut out the figures you prefer: for example, using cookie cutters you can create stars, angels and fir trees, or you can make cylinders of dough to be intertwined, to form small festive garlands and colored. If your decorations are intended to be hung on the tree, chandelier or other furnishings, remember, before cooking, to make a small hole in their upper part, in order to pass a ribbon through them.

Then, put your creations in the oven at 50 ° / 60 °, checking the cooking state with a toothpick. Once out of the oven, have fun coloring and embellishing them with watercolors.

Centerpiece with pine branches

To give joy and a touch of celebration to your table, here is a rather simple work to make. Cut out a round base with a diameter of 20 centimeters in a cardboard box. Then, arrange on its surface some sprigs of pine (pruning residues are perfect) or some other evergreen and glue them to the base, so as to form a green coating that covers it entirely.

At the center of the composition glue a candle, the white and simple ones that many of us have at home or made for the occasion, tying them around a ribbon or tulle veils for wedding favors, possibly red, golden or silver. Finally, cut out the colored paper (used gift paper, glossy magazines or old greeting cards) some stars of different sizes (preferably no more than 2 centimeters wide) and let them fall among the green twigs, like a rain . In this way you will have created, in a very short time, a practical, economical and recycled materials centerpiece, to be exhibited for your lunches and dinners during the festive period.

You can indulge yourself and enrich your centerpiece with pine cones and other decorative elements:

Creative gift bags

Do you want to create personalized and original packaging for your Christmas gifts? Recover some paper shopping bags, preferring those in raw paper, with minimal logos, drawings and writings. So, give free rein to your creativity and your imagination by coloring, brushing or applying decorations to the surface of your gift bag.

You can cut out the shapes best suited to your creativity and inventiveness from the card with greeting cards, from gift wrapping paper or from the pages of newspapers and magazines, or from the scraps of fabric you have at home, at the bottom of some drawer or wardrobe. For the theme of your decoration, you can choose stars, fir trees, angels, snowmen, or focus on more original composites: a lot depends on the personality and taste of the recipient of your gift.

Festoons with recycled paper

With the paper of newspapers and magazines you can create gods in just a few moves colored festoons to decorate the interior of your homes, making the joy of your children, who you can involve in the work.

Cut out the shapes you prefer from the paper, from the more traditional ones, such as stars, to other less Christmas ones, such as leaves, animals, fruits: the choice depends on your taste and the look you want to give to your home.

Then color your shapes with gouache and glue them in pairs, in order to obtain more resistant shapes. Then compose your festoon, passing some string through a small hole that you have made in the upper part of each shape. If you want, you can alternate the shapes with cotton balls or popcorn, to create a funny snow effect.

Garland with recycled materials

To add a festive touch to your front door or living room window, here's one Garland made with materials recovery: bows, twine, ribbons, dried flowers, nuts, leaves, pine cones collected in the street and in parks, dry branches, but also fake flowers, if you have some around the house, scraps of fabric and wads of cotton wool.

Intertwine the dry twigs with iron wire, to form a circular frame, to which you will gradually add the different elements, gluing them carefully. Then pass your ribbon through the frame and secure it, perhaps making sure that it ends, at the bottom, with a small bow. Finally, glue the walnuts, pine cones, dried oranges, dried leaves and any other decorative element on the lattice to give life to your personalized wreath.
