DIY candles: tricks to make them and to make them last longer

Pay attention to these 5 mistakes that are often made when making home-made candles

Candles are always liked by everyone, as well as being a fantastic piece of furniture, they create a warm and welcoming light and atmosphere in any room, releasing an enveloping scent. Furthermore, candles can be a perfect gift for any occasion, especially in the winter season, as they can be placed in any room, giving evocative moments.

Often candles have a very high cost and are full of paraffin and petroleum-derived substances, but contrary to what one might think, preparing them at home is very simple and even fun. Just a few ingredients, easily available online, such as wax tablets, candle wicks, scented essential oils of your choice and coloring tablets will be enough. Just melt the wax tablets (including vegetable ones) in a bain-marie, in the meantime prepare molds and wick, if you do not have silicone molds you can also make your candles directly in a cup, but in this case remember that then the candle will remain there so choose a nice container that is nice.

The wick must be cut to the exact size: it must be the total length of the candle + 7 centimeters.
When the wax has melted, add colors and scented oils or essences: put them directly in the saucepan and mix gently with a steel spoon in order to mix everything well. Prepare the mold by greasing it with vegetable oil then pour the hot wax after placing the wick, finally let the wax solidify and you're done.

Cut the wick short

Cutting the wick helps your candle burn brighter and longer. This practice helps keep the flame under control and prevents smoke stains from forming. After the first burn, cut the wick down to about ¼ inch before lighting it again.

Keep it clean

When cutting the wick check the top wax layer, remove any visible debris on the wax layer to avoid increased flame and fire hazards.

Protect dall'aria in movimento

Keep your candles away from drafty spots at home such as open windows, radiators, or areas that people walk through often. Exposing the candle to moving air can dim or extinguish its flame and cause soot and stains on the vessels.

Use a candle snuffer

Use a special candle extinguisher to extinguish your candles, extinguishing them by blowing could create stains on the container or leave trails of smoke, if you do not have a flame hider you can also use the special cap of the candle that will suffocate the flame without leaving annoying trails.

Do not keep the candle lit for more than 4 hours

Leaving a candle lit for more than 4 hours could damage the air quality in the room and could make the candle last shorter, in fact when the wick overheats it tends to burn faster. Our advice is to leave the candle lit for 2 to 3 hours, with a subsequent cooling period of 24 hours.
