Food supplements contaminated with undeclared or unapproved drugs such as viagra or steroids The shock research conducted in the United States raises the alarm on adulterations especially in products for weight loss or sexual performance. What to watch out for.

Viagra, steroids and other drugs: food supplements scandal is in the United States, many of which turn out to be stuffed with pharmacological products that have not been scrutinized by the authorities. Among the most contaminated would be those for improving sexual performance and losing weight.

It is the alarming discovery that comes from a study conducted by researchers from the California Department of Food and Agriculture, the Cal EIS and the California Department of Public Health, which highlighted the presence of hidden drugs and chemical compounds that could be a serious danger to the health of those who consume them.

The researchers analyzed data collected on dietary supplements by the FDA between 2007 and 2016, showing that Unapproved pharmaceutical ingredients were identified in 776 supplements, especially among those commonly marketed for weight loss, muscle mass gain, and sexual performance enhancement.

The most common adulterants were sildenafil for sexual supplements, sibutramine for weight loss supplements, and synthetic steroids or steroid ingredients for muscle mass supplements, with 157 products (20,2%) containing more than one unapproved ingredient.

The results involved about 146 companies and in most cases the danger involves food supplements that are also purchased online. The tracked substances could be dangerous because, as the researchers explained:

"They can potentially cause serious adverse health effects due to accidental abuse, overuse or interaction with other medications, underlying health conditions or other pharmaceutical products contained within the supplement."

In the States alone, 50% of people routinely consume over-the-counter food supplements, which each year cause 23 emergency room visits and more than 2 hospitalizations. About 75% of the products analyzed were being sold online or by international mail order, so according to the scientists, supplements to buy directly in stores would be safer.

In any case, always remember that even food supplements cannot be abused. It is good to keep in mind that supplements can also have side effects, especially if you are taking medications at the same time. Here you will find 15 supplement ingredients that can be harmful.
