His name was Diesel and he was a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois shepherd: he "worked" for the French police and died at dawn today during the long anti-terrorism operation conducted by the RAID, a special unit of the transalpine law enforcement agencies. in Saint Denis, on the northern outskirts of Paris.

The special units RAID (Research Assistance Intervention Deterrence) they have always used police dogs, training them for intervene in particularly critical situations, such as the search for explosives and people and the release of hostages.

The news of Diesel's death, spread by the Twitter account of the same Police, who wanted to pay homage to the brave animal, bounced on social media with the hashtags #jesuisDiesel, #jesuischien and #jesuisunchien, which quickly became trending topics.

The dynamics of the operation that led to Diesel's death is not yet clear, which began at dawn, around 4, and ended at 11.30 this morning: what is known is that the special police units were in Saint-Denis looking for people connected to the attacks of last 13 November, that numerous gunshots and seven explosions were heard in the vicinity and that the final toll speaks of six injured among the police, two dead terrorists, a man and a woman, and seven arrests.

It is not clear whether there are also among the people who died or were arrested Salah Abdeslam, wanted since Sunday, e Abdel-Hamid Abuoud, considered the mastermind of the attacks: for the moment, the French authorities are keeping a strict reserve on the identity of those involved in the operation.

According to some reconstructions circulating on the net and which are still to be confirmed, around five o'clock this morning Diesel would have been sent on an advance to an apartment, to sniff out the possible presence of explosives. At this point, a woman would have blown herself up to avoid being captured, killing the dog but not making other victims among the policemen: it is therefore very likely that Diesel's own sacrifice saved his human colleagues from the explosion.

It is not the first time that a police dog has lost his life in an anti-terrorism operation: it had already happened last March in Tunis, when Akil, a one and a half year old German shepherd was killed in the raid to free the people held hostage at the Bardo museum. On that occasion, his lifeless body had been carried out of the Tunisian museum on a stretcher, to the moved applause of those present.

Diesel's story shows how the vortex of violence, horror and madness of the last few days doesn't really spare anyone. Perhaps we should ask ourselves whether it is really necessary to involve animals in our wars as well.
