Leonardo DiCaprio, always him. The American actor has just joined Kingo, a Guatemalan company that has long been providing low-cost, off-grid solar energy kits to communities that otherwise wouldn't have access to the electricity grid. DiCaprio became an investor and a member of the board of directors.
In a world where 1,2 billion people live without access to electricity, Kingo literally turns on the light and does so using technologies based on clean energy, which are also economically more accessible.
Energy poverty represents one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. As he also points out Kingo, there is a clear correlation between access to electricity and development. Yet around 17% of the world's population still lives in the dark. Villages without a network have a lower and higher level of education poverty. In addition, they have to resort to more expensive (kerosene / diesel) and polluting energy alternatives.
For this Kingo offers systems based onsolar power intended for offgrid populations around the world. Kingo systems combine a photovoltaic module installed on the roof of the family and a small one battery which allows users to consume energy on site. Compared to most of the existing off-grid solutions, Kingo's prepaid model does not require loans, installation and maintenance costs and allows users to purchase electricity according to their consumption.
Currently around 60.000 households around the world use Kingo's systems, but another 7.000 are added each month. The company aims to provide clean energy to 500 million people by 2035. And Leonardo DiCaprio's support can only help.
“Solar power is the key to a fossil-free future and Kingo's technology will help enable extensive use of clean energy throughout the developing world. I am proud to invest in Kingo as he tries to eradicate energy poverty, and I can't wait to become a consultant for the company ”are the words of the actor.
"We are honored to have Leonardo DiCaprio among us, a person seriously committed to tackling climate and environmental challenges, ready to invest in Kingo and be part of our board", said Fermín Rodriguez of Kingo.
Ensure access to energy for all, exploiting the potential of renewables. Leonardo DiCaprio really believes in it.
