    Let's talk about the berberine of which some studies have highlighted the powerful effects in terms of blood sugar reduction. It is an alkaloid found in various plants such as grapes, barberry and hydraste.

    Taking 500 mg of berberine three times a day appears to improve the control of blood sugar and other markers of type 2 diabetes as well as taking 1500 mg of the diabetes drug Metformin.

    In a series of three studies, using about one gram of berberine per day for 1-3 months in people with metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes, it was shown that fasting blood glucose decreased by 17-26%.

    Incidentally, some evidence suggests that the same berberine supplement may reduce LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in type II diabetics and possibly lead to a small increase in HDL ("good") cholesterol.

    However, it must be specified that berberine has a high potential for interaction with drugs, in some cases even serious. This is a generally safe supplement in normal doses, but more long-term research on its safety is needed.
