Deforestation: Is the solution really paying people not to cut trees?

Reduce deforestation by rewarding those who do not cut down trees. A new study from Northwestern University suggests it could be a solution to revolutionizing global strategy.

Il respect for nature it should be a universal principle, unfortunately we know that the planet is literally dying at the hands of man. Climate change, greenhouse effect, CO2 emissions are terms that have entered the common vocabulary. For this reason, solutions are sought where common sense is not enough.

According to a study conducted by Seema Jayachandran, associate professor of economics at Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences in Northwestern, paying people to conserve trees could be a way to reduce deforestation and carbon emissions.

In practice, the research evaluated the effectiveness of the so-called “Payments for Ecosystems” (PES), or programs in which funding is received if you have pro-environment behavior.

During the experiment, 60 villages of Uganda they received cash prizes, another 61 did not. Thus it emerged that the former refrained from cutting down the forest, the others acted undisturbed to destroy biodiversity.

“We found that the program has had major impacts on forest cover. In villages without the program, 9% of the trees were felled at the beginning of the experiment, resulting in the definitive disappearance at the end of the two years "" we read in the study.

In the villages with the Pes program there have been culls, but less than in previous years.

“The incentives have actually changed people's behavior and done well to the environment showing the effectiveness of the program that is much cheaper than other approaches to reduce carbon emissions, such as subsidies for hybrid or electric vehicles in the United States, ”said Seema Jayachandran.

A forward-looking idea, but we always hope that the common sense prevail, as well as the principle that nature must be respected, without ifs and buts.
