The Decima - Malafede regional nature reserve is considered one of the largest lowland forests in the Mediterranean basin, yet as many as 21 hectares of mixed forest could be cut down.

According to what was reported by the Legal Intervention Group association, the wood shoulders of Castel Romano which include 21 hectares of mixed forest (Quercia, Cerro and Leccio, Corbezzolo, Lentisco, Fillirea, Ginestra, Perastro, Prugnolo), are subject to periodic cuts, with the opening of new roads.

Yet they boast a rich presence of fauna species, including honey buzzard, buzzard, badger, porcupine.

The association made known the documents thanks to which the agricultural company Le Tenute srl obtained the authorization to cut the woods of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (Propaganda Fide), owner of extensive real estate properties in the Agro Romano, by "Roma Natura" (prot. notes n. 3547 of 19 September 2017 e n. 4022 of 19 October 2017), even if the whole area is also protected with the landscape constraint (legislative decree no. 42/2004 and smi).

For this reason, the association on 9 February last sent a request for civic access, environmental information and the adoption of appropriate measures to try to avoid the cutting of the woods that

“It would impoverish the environmental and landscape heritage of a protected natural area that would only deserve care and attention”.

“It would be time for the secular private interests, even of modest entity, to definitively give way in the Agro Romano to the public interest of safeguarding the naturalistic heritage” continues the association.

The response of Roma Natura was not long in coming, which through the President Maurizio Gubbiotti, spoke of a hoax, denying that it is in progress or that any cuts have been authorized.

    However, says Gubbiotti

“At the moment there is only a technical evaluation by the offices. However, the attention is always such that the requirements for carrying out are very strict and completely respectful of the protection of biodiversity both from the point of view of flora and fauna and the authorization process, not yet concluded, is constantly monitored directly by the Park ".

On the affair it is intervened even the WWF: "We do not question that the rules have been followed and that the staff of the RomaNatura organization has operated responsibly, however the cutting of 21 hectares of wood in one of the most biodiverse areas of the capital is symptomatic of a drift policies on protected natural areas. The practice of purchasing cutting rights by the competent authorities is a practice (which is already followed by RomaNatura) to avoid invasive interventions in important and vulnerable areas "says the association," Today the protected areas seem to have slipped to the bottom of the political agenda: scarce dedicated resources, planning tools still awaiting approval and new regulatory provisions that risk jeopardizing the same reasons for which the regional legislator wanted the protection of extraordinary territories with the establishment of parks and reserves natural. We need to recover those reasons and values that supported them in order to imagine a future capable of nature. "
