Creams for children with atopic dermatitis: pay attention to silicone and paraffins, Weleda among the best in the test

A new German test compares 21 creams for atopic dermatitis suitable for children, drawing up the ranking of the best and worst products on the market

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Children's skin, especially in cold periods, can be dry or irritated and in some cases the little ones can also suffer from atopic dermatitis. It is therefore essential to use suitable creams, effective and free of controversial substances. But which are the best on the market? To find out, Öko-Test compared 21.

Atopic dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin that can manifest itself with redness, thickening, burning and real eczema. This is a fairly frequent problem, especially in early childhood and for this reason several cosmetic brands have created specific formulations for children or suitable for them too.

Of course, considering that these products are often used on already irritated skin, it is more important than ever that they are free of problematic ingredients.

Öko-Test bought in pharmacies, parapharmacies and natural cosmetics stores 21 creams suitable for dealing with atopic dermatitis. These are typical products of the German market but some creams are also known and used in our country.

The results

Out of 21 creams, 5 are recommended with "very good" while 9 are still considered "good". As always, however, there are some "rejected" products and among them also a cream of a well-known brand.

But why are some creams not recommended? The study of the labels and the analyzes carried out in a laboratory have highlighted in their composition ingredients that are not exactly delicate on the skin, especially for children.

It is about:

  • Peg: found in 5 creams. Emulsifying substances used to combine fatty and water-soluble components but which can make the skin more permeable to foreign substances.
  • silicones and paraffins: petroleum-based substances that do not blend into the balance of the skin as well as natural fats

Furthermore, paraffins can also be contaminated by aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (MOAH) which were actually found in a cream (but always within the legal limits).

Three products then contain perfume, these are not particularly allergenic fragrances but German experts are wondering if it is really necessary to include them in the formulation of these creams, given that in some cases they can still trigger allergies.

Another problem reported by the test are i synthetic polymers (present in 11 products) which should not be included in the formulation of these creams for environmental reasons. They are in fact liquid plastic compounds that can be difficult to degrade and therefore pollute.

The best and worst creams

Among the creams awarded by the test with the maximum score we find the Weleda Baby and Malva. “Good” are considered the Dr. Hauschka, Eucerin, Hipp, Penaten Ultra and Sebamed calendula cream.
