Coral reefs and ocean acidification: geoengineering comes to the rescue

Le coral reefs I'm in danger. What are the interventions to save them? There geoengineering he is thinking of taking action with gods gas to be directed directly towards the stratosphere, a viable solution, at least according to new research on the subject.

The study in question, conducted by experts from the University of Exeter, has just been published in Nature Climate Change and bears the title of "Coral bleaching under unconventional scenarios of climate warming and ocean acidification". According to experts, to save coral reefs, reducing CO2 emissions is no longer enough.

La geoengineering could be able to contain climate change by injecting gods gas in the stratosphere to form particles capable of reflecting the sun's rays. This could limit the rise in temperatures of the earth's surface and seas.

Unfortunately, therising sea temperatures represents a major threat to coral reefs. In addition, the acidity of the oceans is causing coral bleaching, which can lead to their death.

As the researchers point out, coral reefs are found in one dramatic situation. Perhaps climate engineering could step in to get the world to look beyond simply reducing CO2 emissions.

"Coral reefs are facing a dramatic situation, no matter how intensively society decarbonises the economy" - has explained Peter Cox, expert at the University of Exeter. "There is no direct choice between conventional mitigation and climate engineering, but this study shows that we need to start thinking beyond CO2 mitigation."

If the current situation were to persist without improvement interventions, according to the researchers it is practically certain that we will have to accept how the loss of a large percentage of coral reefs is inevitable in the world already during the century in which we are living.
