The future of the concentrating photovoltaics will pass for the holograms. The innovative system has long been the subject of study and research byHolographic Andalusian Institute (IHA), in Spain, which within the year plans to market a 10 MW production line a Cadiz.

La Spain has long been oriented towards this mode of energy production. But that holographic is new. In fact, the IHA has exploited the characteristics of holograms to obtain better results in the sector PV. In fact, they can focus and select light on a spectral level.

THEholography is a photography technique advanced through which 3D images are created with an optical device, such as mirrors or lenses. As such, it is potentially capable of manipulating light. So why not use these properties to produce energy?

To do this, the IHA uses a particular type of hologram, located in special concentrators, based on the so-called holographic process Volume Holographic Gratings. VHG holograms are constructed using two monochromatic laser beams and a photosensitive resin. This method allows to create multiple lattices with a high inclination angle, thus giving rise to a particular angular, spectral and spatial combination. From an energy point of view, this clearly guarantees a much higher yield because the hologram grids are curved during the development phase to further increase their acceptance angle.

According to its developers, the system with the same power and performance uses less than half the cell surface and weighs 40% less, but above all it is much cheaper, cutting costs by 30% compared to conventional modules.

The only drawback: the path for IEC and UL certifications has not yet started, and, as he explains Qualenergia.com, production has so far been possible only thanks to the funds of the founders themselves, of families and friends, as well as thanks to the public funds of the Andalucian region.

Not just photovoltaic. The system based on holograms it could also be used in other areas. As for energy efficiency, for example, holograms can also be applied to the windows of buildings, in such a way as to allow heat and light to pass in the winter, and reflect it during the summer.
