Rats and rabbits, but also guinea pigs, hamsters and, of course, the so-called guinea pigs. These are the animals most exploited in vivisection, which the "Collina dei Conigli ONLUS" of Monza, a free non-profit association, wants to save from situations of danger and inconvenience to offer them a better life. How? Entrusting them to those who can guarantee them a healthy and constant diet over time, veterinary care and spaces suitable for their needs.

Ratti e rabbits, but also Guinea pigs, hamsters and, of course, the so-called guinea pigs. These are the animals most exploited in vivisection, that the "Collina dei Conigli ONLUS”Of Monza, a free non-profit association, wants to save from dangerous situations and hardships to offer them a better life. How? Entrusting them to those who can guarantee them a healthy and constant diet over time, veterinary care and spaces suitable for their needs.

This is one of the priority objectives of the association, which it deals with recover, rehabilitate and entrust to adoptive families the unfortunate animals from experimentation laboratories.

To facilitate this process, the "Collina dei Conigli ONLUS" offers the consultation of articles and useful information to understand the needs, habits and natural behaviors of each individual species, to allow better integration and simpler coexistence between humans and animals.

For example, as La Repubblica tells us, one of the animals housed in the Onlus institute is Buffy, a rabbit from a Milanese university who was doing pharmaceutical experiments on him. Due to these tests, and the treatment he received during his compulsory stay, he now suffers from encephalitis that prevents him from looking up. According to experts, despite the treatment and recovery, he will never be able to raise his face again.

Another is Jonathan, abandoned as a puppy, who, due to the treatments undergone, is now afraid of anyone who approaches him.

“We assist about 100 rabbits, 80 rats and 40 guinea pigs - he said Stefano Martinelli, president of the association - We recover them from the laboratories of pharmaceutical and veterinary companies, universities and private research centers, which by law can transfer animals in good condition to special facilities at the end of the experiments. We believe that, after making a significant contribution to human well-being, these animals have the right to rebuild a life.
Once out of the laboratories, they cannot survive alone - continued Martinelli - Rabbits are torn from their mother by very small to be forced into tight cages, which do not allow them to stand up on their hind legs. So when they are released and try to do so, they break their spine. In captivity, the ability to communicate with other specimens of the same species is then lost: laboratory rabbits keep their ears low, not knowing that in the outside world their peers consider it an attitude of attack ".

Once properly cared for and rehabilitated, these animals are then adopted by families willing not only to host them at home, but also to help them in progressive rehabilitation; a task that is not always easy, also for the economic costs: “It is unthinkable to give these animals to small children who treat them as toys or to abandon them when it is understood that keeping them is not particularly cheap. A rabbit eats an average of half a kilo of vegetables a day ".

For those interested in giving a second chance to one of these small animals, such as the New Zealand rabbit on the site of the center there is a special section with a gallery updated with all the animals currently available. For those who do not feel like it, but still want to give their contribution, it can help adopting them at a distance.
