Colitis is an intestinal problem, in medical terms defined as irritable bowel syndrome. The classic symptoms that distinguish it are swelling, pain, alternation of constipation and diarrhea, etc. and they vary from person to person. You can suffer from it recurrently as well as have sudden and sporadic attacks.

But what exactly is colitis? We asked Ilaria Deli, a gastroenterologist at Sant'Andrea in Rome, who also explained to us what are the most frequent symptoms it involves, often similar to those of other organic pathologies.

It is common to hear that colitis occurs as a direct consequence of one stressful life or people who are temperamentally more emotional than others. But is it really so? Dr. Deli also explains to us that often people with irritable bowel problems are experiencing a particular tense-emotional state and therefore it would not be stress that causes colitis problems but the phenomenon would simply be explained by the fact that the most emotional have altered and more accentuated perceptions of stimuli (including intestinal ones).

However, those who follow the natural medicine and believe that behind the physical symptoms there are often emotional imbalances obviously he instead considers colitis one of those typical problems of anxious subjects. It is important to have a balanced diet. In fact, in case of colitis problems, we can help ourselves a lot with nutrition.

The more traditional "schools", on the other hand, tend to completely eliminate some vegetables and legumes, accused of creating intestinal gas, fermentation and therefore increasing the sense of bloating and discomfort typical of those suffering from colitis. Nutritionist Valentina Venanzi gave us advice in this regard and also suggests us some herbal teas useful to disinfect the irritated intestine.

What would a naturopath recommend instead? Listen to Dr. Paola Bruni, who suggests not only some beneficial foods for the intestine but also to use for example probiotics and magnesium. All combined with regular physical activity which can also be a simple walk or yoga. If you suffer from this disorder it is indeed important to take care of your body but also to keep your mind healthy and relaxed!

Finally the advice of ours trusted herbalist, Beatrice Ciarletti which explains us which herbal teas are best suited to relieve the intestine and how to prepare them.
