The cold helps to lose the extra pounds. An inexpensive way to lose weight? Lower the temperature of the radiators Lowering the temperature of the radiators, at home or in the office, would make you lose weight and fight obesity like a diet associated with healthy physical activity. And it is also welcome for the environment.

This is the theory that some Dutch scholars of the University of Maastricht have been following for a decade in a research on effects of cold on metabolism.

A lower internal temperature would allow our body to respond better to climate change and thermal shocks in the long term and - according to scientists - at least in young people and up to middle age the production of heat linked to low ambient temperatures represents up to 30% of the total energy supply. This means that the lower temperatures can significantly increase the number of calories burned instead of being stored as fat.

"We hypothesize - say the Dutch researchers led by Dr. Wouter van Marken Lichtenbelt - that the thermal environment affects human health and in particular that frequent exposure to a mild cold can significantly affect our energy consumption for prolonged periods of time" . In practice, if you want to lose weight you have to "avoid excessively high temperatures and train yourself to live below 20 degrees".

The research has resumed a Japanese study according to which passing 2 hours a day at 17 degrees for 6 weeks results in a decrease in body fat. Now, the Maastricht researchers have concluded that if you spend 6 hours a day at low temperatures for 10 days, the percentage of brown fat increases, which makes us feel better and also makes us resist living around 15 degrees.

From the pages of Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism, the researchers conclude that “in most buildings, the internal temperature is regulated in such a way as to minimize the share of unsatisfied people. But entire populations can be prone to developing diseases such as obesity. Furthermore, people become vulnerable to sudden changes in the ambient temperature. This results in relatively high internal temperatures in winter ”.

In short, lower the temperature of the thermostats so you make a gift to your body, your psyche and the Earth! It would be a good idea to never exceed 20 degrees at home and in the office, for the sake of peace also of the bills ...
