According to recent research, coffee could protect the body from cognitive impairment, which often precedes Alzheimer's disease

If just the thought of giving up your morning coffee puts you in a bad mood, here's some good news: according to a recent study higher coffee consumption has been linked to a lower risk of developing cognitive impairment, which often precedes Alzheimer's syndrome. A systematic review

The researchers looked at the habitual coffee intake and cognitive health of 227 older adults over a period of about 10 years. They found that higher coffee consumption was associated with a slower decline in executive function and attention. Those who drank coffee were also less likely to developAlzheimer.

The mechanism is likely related to how coffee keeps the buildup of amyloid, considered a hallmark of Alzheimer's and cognitive decline as it destroys neurons in the brain. The research found that patients who consumed coffee had slower amyloid accumulation, and better maintenance of hippocampal volume.

The reason? Caffeine plays an important role, but it's not the only substance that could make a difference; in fact, it is coffee that has unique properties that can not only affect brain health, but can also offer additional benefits.

Coffee is the best source of antioxidants which is able to protect the body from various diseases, such as 2 type diabetes, liver disease, and some types of cancer. Obviously, even in this case, moderation is essential; for example, a study that looked at data on more than 350.000 participants found heart health benefits associated with consuming one or two cups of coffee a day, but when consumed in excess the benefits diminished dramatically.

The recommendation is to consume less than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day; It is also important not to overdo it with sugar and other sweeteners which could negate the antioxidant action.
