Woe to call them waste. Not only do they serve as a fertilizer for plants, insect repellent and a valuable aid for house cleaning: coffee grounds are also one veritable mine of antioxidants. A research group led by Maria Paz de Peña, professor of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of Navarra, reveals that coffee grounds, too often considered only as simple waste, could be a precious resource for the production of food supplements .

According to the lead author of the study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, as stated in a note, "approximately 20 million tons of waste from the consumption of coffee. Of these, most end up in the trash. However, this work shows how the coffee grounds that remain in the filter have the same amount of antioxidants as coffee beans same".

Before reaching this conclusion, the team analyzed the amount of antioxidants present in coffee grounds derived from different methods of preparation (and consumption), finding that a greater amount of antioxidants can be found in the coffee grounds prepared with the capsules, filters and bar espresso.

On the contrary, the one prepared with the Moka coffee maker, contains less useful substances. However, these are very high levels. For this reason, the reuse of funds, whatever the type of preparation from which they are derived, would contribute to reduction of organic waste and an improvement of good environmental practices. In short, woe to those who throw in the garbage that pile of filtered coffee that remains after having disassembled the coffee pot!
