You wake up every morning with the smell of coffee that expands around the house and with your nice steaming cup ready to be drunk? Well this would not be a healthy habit, at least according to a team of scientists from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, in Maryland.

The researchers, led by neuroscientist Steven Miller, evaluated the different effect that coffee has throughout the day in relation to cortisol levels (popularly known as the stress hormone) present in the body. Depending on whether the levels of this hormone are high or low, the effects of caffeine would be different: beneficial or harmful.

The best time to drink coffee is, according to the researchers, mid-morning, between 9:30 and 11:30 or, more indicatively, a couple of hours after waking up. At this time of day, you can enjoy the most beneficial effects of caffeine, as cortisol levels are low.

In reverse as soon as you get up this hormone would be at its peak, we should therefore be able to wake up without the need to take any substance. Drinking coffee at this stage of the day could not only not serve to wake us up but, in the worst case, it risks making the body addicted to caffeine making us "addicted" and therefore eager to consume more of this drink or to aspire to a taste stronger and stronger. For the same reason it is It is not recommended to drink coffee at lunchtime and between 17:30 pm and 18:30 pm.

Miller himself, however, makes an important clarification: those given are general indications, in fact it must be borne in mind that cortisol levels vary from person to person and therefore even the times in which to drink or not to drink coffee are not actually the same for everyone.
