A new German test has put some brands of cocoa powder for children under the magnifying glass and found that, in addition to an excessive sugar content, there is a risk of contamination by pollutants. The Nesquik was very bad, while only one cocoa reached the score of "very good".

A new German test has put some brands of cocoa powder for children discovering that, in addition to an excessive sugar content, there is the risk of contamination by pollutants. Bad was the Nesquik while only one cocoa achieved the "very good" score.

Cocoa powder is an ingredient so loved by children (and not only by them) often chosen to start the day.

Unfortunately, even in this case, it seems that it is a product that has some dark sides: not only the presence of too much sugar in it but also traces of polluting and potentially dangerous substances.

The alarm is once again raised by the German consumer magazine Öko-Test whose laboratories have analyzed 13 types of cocoa powder for children with the aim of identifying any traces of mineral oil, cadmium, unwanted microbial loads and aromatic hydrocarbons polycyclic.

These are the brands examined:

  • Goody Cao -Lidl
  • Penny Cho-Quick – Penny
  • I! Cocoa Drink - Rewe
  • Good & Cheap Choco Drink – Edeka
  • Nestlé Nesquik - Nestlé
  • K-Classic Chocolate Drink – Kaufland
  • Karli Kugelblitz Choco Drink – Netto brand discount
  • Schovit - Aldi Nord
  • Kaba The Plantation Potion – Mondelez
  • Rapunzel Tiger Quick drinking chocolate, organic – Rapunzel
  • Naturata Cocoa Beverage, Organic & Fairtrade - Naturata
  • Bio-Zentrale Biokids cocoa drink, organic & fair trade – Bio-Zentrale
  • Vivani Cavi Quick, Bio - Eco Finia

The results of the cocoa test

From what has emerged, it seems that children should rarely drink cocoa not only for the too much sugar, but also because there may be some residues inside mineral oils.

Only one product was rated "very good", 7 was rated "good" while all the others were rated worse.

In the last place, what is probably the best known cocoa powder used by children: the Nesquik from Nestlé which has been evaluated "insufficient".

Cocoa powder: mineral oils and too many sugars, test results. Nesquik the worst

The well-known product received the worst scores overall. The reason is basically that inside its packaging, in addition to too high levels of sugar and artificial vitamins, excessive traces of mineral oils have been found, i.e. it has been found heavily contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons.

Nestlé has already intervened on the matter by declaring that it does not accept the result and questioning the methods by which the mineral oils were detected by the German laboratory (“Öko-Test” follows the DIN standard - German Institute for Standardization). It must be said, among other things, that an independent study supporting Nestlé's doubts has never been presented by the group.

Nesquik is the worst but not the only one that has contaminants in it. According to the test, four baby cocoa powders contain "high" content of saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH / POSH), substances accused of being able to damage organs such as the liver and lymph nodes.

Residues of these substances can pass from the packaging to food. However, cocoa beans and sugar can also come into contact with lubricating oils during production.

In addition, in ten out of 13 powders the sugar content "increased" or "significantly increased" according to the dosage recommendation. The best turned out to be an organic cocoa for children.

It is evident, and not only from the results of this test, that children should be offered a very different breakfast from the classic milk and cocoa.
