For the third consecutive year, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo and Nestlé have been named as the world's biggest polluters for plastic production. This was revealed in the Break Free From Plastic report "BRANDED Vol III: Demanding Corporate Accountability for Plastic Pollution" published in recent days.

Impossible to deny it. Plastic pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in the world, and multinationals are largely responsible for it, according to a new study. Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestlé have named the world's top plastic polluters for the third consecutive year, facing mounting criticism for their lack of action.

This year, the Break Free From Plastic Brand Audit, an annual citizen action initiative that involves counting and documenting brands in relation to plastic waste found in communities around the world, collected 346.494 pieces of plastic. from 55 countries. Furthermore, for the 2020 edition of the Break Free From Plastic dossier, the essential work of volunteers who are involved in collecting waste, especially in the South of the world, and the impact that low-value single-use plastic has on their means of subsistence.

And the results confirm that among the largest producers are Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestlé. Unfortunately, these large companies have been at the top of the sad ranking for 3 years. To follow we find Unilever, Mondelez, Mars, P&G, Philip Morris, Colgate-Palmolive and Perfetti.

“It is not surprising to see the same big brands on the podium of the world's top plastic polluters for three consecutive years. These companies claim they are addressing the plastics crisis yet continue to invest in false solutions by partnering with oil companies to produce even more plastic. To stop this chaos and fight climate change, multinationals such as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestlé must end their addiction to single-use plastic packaging and abandon fossil fuels, "said Abigail Aguilar, Regional Coordinator of the Plastics Campaign for Greenpeace Southeast Asia.

A total of 13.834 Coca-Cola brand plastics waste was registered in 51 countries. This is more plastic than the sum of the other two major global polluters combined. This is followed by PepsiCo with 5.155 plastic waste found in 43 countries and Nestlé with 8.633 in 37 countries. According to the dossier, despite good intentions, there has been an increase in the number of plastic products compared to last year.

In the latest report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, it was made clear that these companies have made no progress in addressing the plastic pollution crisis. Single-use plastics have devastating effects not only on our Earth but especially for the poorest populations: communities in the global South are witnessing the rapid escalation of low-quality single-use plastic packaging aggressively placed on the market by major multinationals.

“The world's leading polluting companies say they are working hard to solve plastic pollution, but instead continue to pump harmful single-use plastic packaging. We need to stop the production of plastics, phase out single use and implement robust and standardized reuse systems. Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestlé should be at the forefront of finding real solutions, ”concluded Emma Priestland, Break Free From Plastic's Global Corporate Campaigns Coordinator.
