You buy citric acid at the pharmacy or on the internet. Ask for pure anhydrous citric acid and make sure the product is suitable for home use. Citric acid is really one multipurpose resource, which you can use to make not only rinse aid for your dishwasher, but also also a descaler for cleaning the house, a descaler for the washing machine and a softener for the laundry.
To prepare the do-it-yourself rinse aid with citric acid for the dishwasher you will need:
- 1 graduated 1 liter container
- 1 glass or wooden rod
- 1 electronic scale
- 1 pair of gloves
- 1 funnel
- 150 grams of citric acid
- Water
When handling citric acid, wear gloves as a precaution. Weigh 150 grams of citric acid directly into the graduated container, which you will have placed on the scale. Then pour water into it until it reaches the liter mark. Mix with a wand and with the help of a funnel transfer the solution into the chosen container.
By following the indicated procedure you will get 1 liter of 15% citric acid solution. For greater accuracy, you can replace tap water with distilled water. For theuse in the dishwasher, you will need to fill the special compartment for rinse aid with part of the liquid obtained before operating the appliance for normal washing.
Store your do-it-yourself rinse aid in a bottle or detergent bottle. Using it every day, you will consume it in a rather short time. However, the solution can be kept for a long time without problems. If you prefer prepare a small amount of rinse aid each time, pour into a graduated container 15 grams of citric acid, add water until it reaches the 100 milliliter mark and mix. Your dishwasher rinse aid will be ready for use immediately.
