Cinnamon supplements: This is the maximum dose of coumarin not to be exceeded to avoid liver problems

In the kitchen we often use cinnamon but there are some people who take supplements based on this spice (often to keep blood sugar at bay) which contain concentrated doses of active ingredients. It is coumarin in particular which, if taken in excess, can lead to serious side effects.

La coumarin is an aromatic compound potentially toxic to the liver. This substance is found in cinnamon in different doses depending on the variety (that of Ceylon contains less while those of China and Indonesia larger quantities).

In France, Anses warned that a certain daily dose of coumarin should never be exceeded.

The dose of coumarin not to be exceeded

There is talk of 0,1 mg of coumarin per pound of body weight per day. This corresponds to 6 mg for a 60 kg person.

The problem is that supplement manufacturers recommend that you ingest 1000 to 8000 mg of cinnamon per day. With Chinese cinnamon this equates to 3-24 mg of coumarin. A 60 kg person can therefore ingest up to 4 times the maximum recommended dose.

According to the National Agency for Health Safety (ANSES), the risk of overdose is therefore absolutely real. Since 2006, Anses has collected 114 reports.

Most people complained of digestive disorders (40%), but in very high doses coumarin can cause severe liver damage (liver cytolysis, liver failure).

As a precaution, therefore, it is better to focus on less concentrated products, and it is absolutely advisable to do without them if you suffer from liver disease.
