The Christmas atmosphere brings with it joy and harmony, but are we sure that everyone lives Christmas with this spirit? For many, in fact, this is the period of Christmas blues, that is, depression and bad thoughts at parties. Here are some tips for living more peacefully.

Contrary to popular belief, Christmas holidays can turn out to be a difficult time: the effort of preparations, long queues, relatives to manage and for this reason we had already told you about how to deal with anxiety and stress at Christmas.

Now some advice in a pill comes from the psychotherapist Giovanni Porta who helps us to 'survive the holidays'.

“No family is perfect. In addition to managing daily life, those who are ill must also undertake the preparation of parties. The end of the year is approaching and with it, in addition to the horoscopes, also the balance sheets of what we have managed to achieve, and, of course, there will not be only positive things. It's normal. Comparison with others, especially for insecure people, can be overwhelming, ”explains Porta.

How to get rid of depression during the Christmas holidays

Focus on the affection of those around you

According to Porta, people who live badly during the Christmas period often focus their attention only on the typical impositions of this period: having to participate in interminable lunches and dinners, having to talk to relatives who may not frequent each other, having to give gifts deemed superfluous, etc.

“It's true: family and social obligations rain down at Christmas. But not only! After all, Christmas is the feast in which the most important bonds of our life are celebrated through the exchange of gifts. It is a time when you can show the affection you feel towards some people. Try to concentrate on this: on affection, on warmth, on safety, and not just on obligations and constraints ”.

Are you not entertained? Get proactive

Are you bored to death and the dinner lasts another 7 hours? Then propose something: a game, an activity, a walk, take the dog out, go and see a relative's new car. In short, it creates movement, stasis is the end!

Remember that boredom is contagious, so if you're bored, people around you are probably feeling the same thing too. Ally with them, instead of seeing them as unworthy of your boredom, and try to create an interesting situation together.

Train the irony

Who hasn't come across some awkward questions like "How's your work?", "Do you have a boyfriend / girlfriend?", "When are you getting married?", "When are you having a nice grandchild?" perhaps in the midst of a table of twenty people. Here are Porta's goodies to get out of it without being rude:

• You have a girlfriend? "I prefer to always have at least two"
• How is work going? "Well, like the national football team"
• When will you get married? "You ask me every year but don't lose hope!"
• When are you making a nice grandchild? “Soon, in no more than a decade”.

Turning envy into motivation

Seeing someone in better situations than your own isn't easy, but dealing with your own envy isn't necessarily bad. It becomes so if we begin to devalue ourselves, to feel inferior and mediocre. Much more productive is making a list of the things you envy, and trying to reach them whenever possible throughout the year. When it is impossible, remember that the most important things in life cannot be bought, and that if you fill your life with intangibles such as love, friends, interests, you can still feel rich.

Stop to consumerism and gifts made with the heart, perhaps wrapping them with your own hands in a personalized way. It will be nice to see that the objects you give are the result of careful and personalized thought.
