If you are taking statins to lower cholesterol, there is a side effect you should be aware of.

In a research carried out by the American College of Cardiology, the various side effects of statins, mainly associated with the gastrointestinal tract, were studied, including:

  • constipation,
  • diarrhea,
  • dyspepsia,
  • flatulence,
  • stomach ache,
  • nausea and vomit.

La flatulence is the most common side effect, affecting approximately 5% of patients taking statins. Among the various methods of reducing this effect, experts advise avoid carbonated drinks, consume small portions of food and eat more slowly, so as to decrease the amount of air that is ingested. The intake of digestives or charcoal tablets (tablets against abdominal and intestinal swelling) can also help. It is also recommended to practice physical activity of at least 30 minutes for 5 days a week. A brisk walk would be ideal, as it also helps lower cholesterol levels.
