It is truly horrifying what happened to hundreds of Filipino boys and children, put behind bars by the authorities in recent weeks to make poor Filipino cities more presentable for the arrival of Pope Francis.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Locked up in squalid and dirty detention centers alongside adult criminals. Forced to sleep on concrete floors and go to the toilet in buckets. Beaten or mistreated by older inmates and, in some cases, even chained to pillars.

It is truly horrifying what has happened to hundreds of Filipino boys and children, put behind bars by the authorities in recent weeks to making poor Philippine cities more presentable for the arrival of Pope Francis.

To reveal it is a MailOnline survey, which brought to light an obvious abuse of the country's child protection laws, immortalizing the terrible images of street children locked up in appalling conditions in Manila.

No education. No games or fun. No respect for freedom and human dignity. No legal representation for these children, thrown behind bars without any regular judicial proceedings and left to fend for themselves.

Accompanying the reporters inside one of these horror centers was Father Shay Cullen, a 71-year-old Irish missionary candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize, who here released an unrecognized child of about seven years old, Mak-Mak, with legs and body riddled with scabies.

“Unfortunately, there is no way the Pope for the Pope to visit these detention centers in Manila. I am a shame to the nation. Officials here would reset in horror at the prospect of the Pope seeing children being treated in this way, ”says the missionary.

The boy, who shares the name with the Pope Francisco, now recovering in a children's home run by a charity, but protests over his case have failed to stop this dirty operation, nor to improve conditions in the city's 17 detention centers, where it is estimated that there are 20.000 children detained every year.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis unexpectedly visited a center for street children, just like those illegally detained in these prisons. Father Antonio Spadaro, director of Catholic Civilization, writes on Twitter. The photos of the meeting with children stolen from the street, drugs and prostitution are really moving:

The Pope as a father. The meeting with young people rescued from the street, next to the Cathedral was a very strong moment. #PopePhilippines
