Natural childbirth, as the name suggests, is undoubtedly the best solution to bring your children into the world. In particular cases it is obviously necessary to resort to Caesarean section which, however, can also have side effects, like all surgeries, for mother and baby. New research suggests that babies born with a caesarean are more at risk obesity.

We recently told you the story of mother Patrizia and her Lotus Birth, a natural birth that took place at home with very particular dynamics. At the antipodes of this experience there is certainly that of a Caesarean section that many mothers find themselves forced to do for various reasons. It seems that among the disadvantages of caesarean section there is also a greater predisposition of children to obesity compared to natural childbirth.

A new research, of the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health published in JAMA Pediatrics, came to the conclusion that those born by caesarean section have a 15% more to be struggling with obesity problems during childhood or adolescence (between 9 and 14) a situation that obviously can persist even into adulthood. These findings are the result of a review of previous research that sampled further 22 thousand young people as part of the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS), a study on growth from 1996 to 2012.

It should also be emphasized that the percentage of risk of obesity even rose to 64% for boys and girls born by caesarean section if compare yourself with your brothers or sisters instead born with natural childbirth.

So he commented on the results obtained Jorge Chavarro, lead author of the study:

“Cesarean deliveries are undoubtedly a necessary and life-saving procedure in many cases but they also have some known risks for the mother and the newborn. Our results show that the risk of obesity in offspring could be another factor to consider ”.

The research also considered other obesity risk factors before, during and after pregnancy. The authors believe that the correlation between caesarean section and increased obesity risk is due to the presence of a different gut microbiota compared to children born from natural childbirth who, through the passage in the vaginal canal, obtain some bacteria from the mother from birth.

Of course, even if our children are born by caesarean section, we can always keep overweight and obesity away teaching him right away rules of one healthy nutrition.
