Chemicals: detergents and asthma, a dangerous relationship

Red eyes? Throat on fire? Burning in the skin? Difficulty in breathing? They are not symptoms of a new epidemic, nor the consequence of a nasty flu virus, but they could be the symptoms you experience when cleaning your home.

Red eyes? Throat on fire? Burning in the skin? Difficulty in breathing? They are not symptoms of a new epidemic, nor the consequence of a nasty flu virus, but they could be the symptoms you experience when clean your home.

An English study carried out by the doctor's team Rebecca Elisabeth Ghosh dell’ Imperial College London conducted in mid-2012 and published just a few days ago in the international journal of respiratory medicine "Thorax”Examined more than 9 thousand people among housewives, farmers, mechanics, typographers and hairdressers (some of the most relevant categories because they are more exposed to chemicals and detergents) and proved that more than 7 thousand of the subjects have reported consequences on their health due toconstant use of many chemicals commonly used in the normal course of their business.

The substances examined have provoking severe irritations and, object of the study, the appearance of asthma in adults, even in healthy subjects and without any type of asthma or asthmatic bronchitis in childhood.

The worst of all the substances analyzed are the spray, it is easy to understand why given their enormous environmental diffusion: they are inhaled continuously and cause serious respiratory damage.

The study's conclusions therefore suggest that around the 16% of adult asthma cases taken under consideration could be due to professional activities to which the subjects are exposed.

Many are the prohibited chemicals from the ministry for the environment and those belonging to the REACH regulation which are easily accessible also online and aimed at "promoting the substitution of chemicals of greatest concern and encouraging innovation in the European chemical industry".

However, if we decide to do the spring cleaning, let's rely on natural substances such as citric acid, bicarbonate, vinegar, lemon, hot watera, steam, a nice microfiber cloth and the always good old elbow grease and… health and the environment will thank you!

If, on the other hand, we are in contact with chemicals for work, we try to adopt protections and precautions and if possible ventilate the rooms well.
