Manto road more economical, resistant and ecological. How? Leveraging the plastic recycled. This is the idea of the engineer Toby McCartney which has devised a solution to tackle the problem of pollution related to plastic. His company, the MacRebur, based in Scotland, produces a special type of asphalt produced by reusing this material pollutant.

About 45 million km of roads cross the surface of the Earth. And hundreds of millions of barrels of oil are used to cover them. Still fossil sources, definitely polluting. Yet the alternative exist. We have already seen the roads built with photovoltaic panels, or even those with tires out of use.

Le roads towns require maintenance, as time deteriorates them by opening holes. Not to mention that around the oceans there are trillions of pieces of plastic. McCartney offered a solution to both problems by turning 100% recycled plastic into MR6, small waste plastic pellets that replace bitumen, the roadside material extracted from crude oil and sold by oil companies.

MR6, according to its creator, is even more resistant e it lasts about ten times longer compared to commonly used materials. Normally, normal roads consist of around 90% rock, sand and limestone, and 10% bitumen. The MacRebur process aims to replace its own bitumen, using plastic from household, agricultural and commercial waste.

The result? The roads last longer, are covered with 100% recycled materials, reduce the use of fossil fuels and the carbon footprint, use unwanted plastics destined for landfill or worse still in the seas and help promote a circular economy.

La prima road made by MacRebur is the one that leads to his home, but several streets of the county of Cumbria in the UK they have already been covered with this special asphalt.
