According to one study in fact, the University of Texas chamomile can reduce the risk of death from all causes, especially in slightly older women.
To reach this conclusion, the American researchers analyzed the consumption of chamomile and other types of infusions, in relation to the risk of premature mortality, by 1.677 Mexican-Americans in about 7 years. The data were extrapolated from the Hispanic Established Populations for Epidemiologic Study for the Elderly, aimed at subjects aged 65 or older.
From the results obtained, the scholars have highlighted that the consumption of chamomile was reserved for about 14% of the men and women involved and that the intake of the relaxing drink par excellence also offered a d29% decrease in the risk of mortality in women (men would be excluded from this benefit). The results remained unchanged even when the researchers considered other variables, such as health conditions or different lifestyles.
An outcome that researchers still struggle to give a logical explanation. "The reason for a difference in reported results between Hispanic women and men is unclear, although it has been shown that women are more frequent users of chamomile than men - explains Bret Howrey, assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch. This is a difference that could reflect traditional family gender roles, where women attend to the daily activities of the home, including family health, and could also reflect greater confidence in relying on natural folk remedies such as herbs " .
