Celiac disease: early diagnosis thanks to a blood test

Celiac disease, is it possible to diagnose the presence of the disease even before its most evident symptoms appear? A test for the detection of celiac disease is already available at the laboratories of the Giannina Gaslini Institute in Genoa, based on the execution of simple blood tests. Experts predict that it may soon be available in the form of a commercial kit.

Celiac Disease, it's possible Diagnostic the presence of the disease even before its most obvious symptoms manifest themselves? At the laboratories ofGiannina Gaslini Institute di GenoVa a test for the detection of celiac disease, based on performing blood tests. Experts predict that it may soon be available in the form of a commercial kit.

The development of the test was born from carrying out specific research in our country, started years ago by monitoring a large group of children genetically predisposed celiac disease, some of which actually developed the disease over the next several years.

The most recent study in question arose from a collaboration between experts from the Gaslini Institute of Genoa and the University of Verona. The researchers focused on the presence of antibodies acts to act against the VP7 protein of Rotavirus, verified only in subjects with celiac disease. The presence of these antibodies had been detected in children undergoing monitoring as early as ten years before the disease presented itself.

The results of the research conducted by experts have found their official publication in the pages of the scientific journal Immunologic Research. The blood test would be sufficient to identify the presence of the disease even earlier than it would currently be thanks to the use of specific diagnostic tests.

According to what was declared by Lorenzo Moretta, scientific director of the Gaslini Institute, as reported in the pages of The Sun 24 hours: “The diagnosis of celiac disease available today is based on the presence in the blood of particular antibodies directed against an enzyme (Transglutaminase) that acts on gluten, and on a biopsy performed with gastroscopy. Our study therefore represents an important step forward for an early diagnosis of celiac disease and can be particularly useful in the case of celiac disease with atypical extraintestinal symptoms or in cases of silent celiac disease ".

The blood test could therefore facilitate one early diagnosis of celiac disease, to be carried out even when the symptoms of the disease are not yet evident and in the event that there may be a genetic predisposition to the development of the same. The identification of the disease can therefore be more immediate, favoring the early implementation of the necessary actions to safeguard the state of health of patients.
