Cats: how and why to secure balconies

Cats are said to have seven lives, but a sudden gust of wind or a loud noise is all it takes to result in a potentially fatal fall. Here's how to secure balconies

Cats injured or dead after falling from balconies? It happens more often than you might think. For this, after having rescued several cats following this type of accident, The British Columbia Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals published a warning to owners who live in the upper floors to safeguard their pets.

“In our Vancouver shelter we have had five cats seriously injured after jumping or falling off the balcony in the past month alone,” says Jodi Dunlop, director of SPCA's Vancouver shelter. “Two of the cats were in extreme distress, with multiple injuries, so much so that we couldn't save them. It is excruciating to think of the excruciating pain and suffering these cats must have endured ”.

It is important that all owners recognize the dangers of living in an apartment with a balconyne.

People think cats have extraordinary balance, but a sudden gust of wind or a sudden noise is enough to scare a cat and result in a potentially fatal fall. We hope this warning can prevent further damage and deaths from occurring, ”adds Dunlop.

Cats: how and why to secure balconies

If we live with a cat and have one or more balconies, then what can we do? We need to make sure we secure it, closing the whole area so that the cats cannot fall between the bars or over the balcony railing. There are many ways to secure a balcony, safeguarding the well-being of our cats and avoiding potential tragedies. You go from polycarbonate to transparent PVC, passing through nets and mosquito nets.

The Micio Protection Association dedicates an album with photos sent by adopters and volunteers to illustrate Fr.possible solutions, some simpler, others more elaborate, but in any case easily achievable by anyone, "to demonstrate that it is possible to live with a cat at home and prevent it from walking on the balcony railing without thereby securing yourself at home":
