A card arrives in Catania to encourage the adoption of dogs from shelters with discounts for veterinary expenses and the purchase of feed
The councilor for the protection of animals Michele Cristaldi has recently presented an initiative entitled "Catania Dog Card" for encourage the adoption of dogs from kennels and shelters of the city and thus fight the phenomenon of strays that flares up in the trinacria. How? Through a loyalty card that can be requested online on the municipal website with the request for adoption of a dog.
The project guarantees adopting families a series of concessions and discounts at affiliated establishments that include veterinary clinics, pet food stores, but also insurance policies which they can benefit from by showing the card that will be issued to anyone who wants to adopt a four-legged friend. The conditions necessary for obtaining the Catania Dog Card require that the dog has been in one of the facilities affiliated with the Municipality of Catania for at least 3 months.

The project - said the commissioner Cristaldi - will contribute to reducing the phenomenon of straying by gradually transforming it into a social resource through the creation, at no cost for the municipal administration, of a collaborative network of professionals, businesses and citizens that will gradually allow to do without the need for kennels "
Councilor Cristaldi said that he thus wants to provide new dog owners with help given the economic difficulties of the pandemic that is still underway.
Whether the initiative is welcomed by the people of Catania with the same enthusiasm or not, it is certainly important to remember that adoption must always be a conscious choice driven by love and not by the advantages that can be obtained through this because a dog, a cat or any other living being must be looked after forever. Certainly, however, given the expenses to be incurred for the maintenance of the animal, this initiative does nothing but be a step forward to encourage the adoption of animals - rather than their purchase - and empty kennels.
