Cat slaughter in Taiwan: 154 victims of animal smuggling were brutally euthanized

Controversy broke out in Taiwan following the killing of 154 purebred cats, victims of animal smuggling.

A Taiwan there was a real massacre of cats. 154 specimens have been killed in recent days, "guilty" of having ended up in the hands of unscrupulous animal smugglers intent on illegally importing purebred cats to the island. The drama took place a couple of days ago on a fishing boat from China, which was intercepted about 60 km off the coast of Kaohsiung.

Inside the boat, the authorities discovered dozens of cages in which 154 Russian Blue, Ragdoll, Persian American Shorthair and British Shorthair cats were held, worth around 300 thousand euros. Faced with this situation, government officials opted for a drastic solution, namely the culling of poor cats as they represented a risk to biosecurity, given that their true origin remained unknown and could have transmitted diseases to other animals in the country. . The death sentence of the felines has sparked a wave of indignation among citizens and animal rights groups.

The president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, known for being an animal lover, also spoke on the sad story. But the blame for what happened was attributed to the smugglers.

It is really sad to see euthanasia for smuggled animals under vaccination regulations. - Tsai Ing-wen said on Facebook - Many people have furry friends in their homes, we share the same sentiment. I would like to express my strongest condemnation of smugglers, your personal attempt at self-gain. However, I hope that the Members of Parliament understand that in order to protect pets from the risk of an epidemic caused by smuggling of animals, the legal rules in force must be applied. I know there is a lot of dissatisfaction with killing cats and of course we need to review and refine such a system.

It is really sad to see the result that smuggled animals have to be euthanized under the epidemic prevention regulations. In particular, many people also have hairy children in their homes, and we feel the same way.Because of the selfishness of the smugglers, all this lost is life.I would like to express the most severe condemnation to the smugglers. The result of your personal pursuit of personal gain and failure to follow legal procedures is to create…

But the motivation for the gesture did not go down to many users, who wondered why a less bloody alternative, such as quarantine for cats, was not considered.

The NGO Taiwan Animal Emergency Rescue also offered to pay for the cat quarantine, but the attempt proved unsuccessful.

Animals are innocent - the animal rights association underlined - There are border regulations, but you can always check whether the animals are sick or not. We understand the importance of laws and regulations for home ecology, but we hope that the law can be changed and that it treats these lives in a more humane way.

It is really absurd that animals must always pay, even with the same life, for human actions ...
