    - hemp based foods they are more and more popular and it is now not uncommon to find hemp seeds, oil obtained from seeds, flours and other products derived from Cannabis sativa on the shelves.

Until now, however, they had not yet been fixed limits for cannabinoid content within these foods.
From now on, however, biscuits, taralli, bread and baked goods made with hemp, as well as vegan-like cheeses, tofu, hemp beer and other drinks, must respect the limits set out in the new legislation.

With the decree of the Ministry of Health, published in the Official Gazette, the law has now established that hemp oil it must not contain more than 5 milligrams of THC per kilo, a limit that drops to 2 milligrams per kilo regarding supplements and foods other than oil, such as seeds, flours and derived products.

The awaited publication in the Gazzetta sheds light on a sector that in recent years - notes Coldiretti - has seen a real boom, from biscuits and taralli to bread, from flour to oil, but there are also those who use it to produce ricotta, tofu and a tasty vegan drink, as well as beer., commented Coldiretti.

For the moment, the cast of the regulated foods listed in the annex to the decree includes only seeds, flours and oil, but it will be updated periodically based on new findings.

I hemp seeds, as well as the oil and the flours derived from them, are in any case practically free of tetrahydrocannabinol and in general of cannabinoids, mainly present in the resin produced by the glands found on the bracts of female inflorescences.

No news regarding other hemp-based products, including for example cosmetics and the well-known “legal herb”, after the removal of the legislation that made the sale legitimate.

La legislation governing the supply chain it continues to limit itself to regulating cultivation, while the decree just published regulates only one of the sectors linked to hemp, effectively leaving about three thousand companies without clear rules.

In any case, as Coldiretti points out, the decree responds to the hundreds of farms they have invested in the cultivation of hemp, increasing the hectares of cultivated land in our country by 10 times, which went from 400 hectares in 2013 to 4000 in 2018.
