Can you really live without bills? Alessandro Ronca's challenge in the Renewable Energy Park

    In the Renewable Energy Park you can live (almost) without bills: Alessandro Ronca tells us how we can really reduce energy costs, a challenge that, today more than ever, we must win

    He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

    'Living without bills', the title of a book but also an attractive possibility, especially in this period of energy crisis. In the Renewable Energy Park, officially inaugurated in 2009, you live (almost) without bills, 95% independent from the network. Between Todi and Amelia, in the Municipality of Guardea and in the province of Terni, here is a real example of how we can reduce our energy costs.

    The Park has several objectives: it is in fact a real center for research, experimentation and optimization of renewable energy systems and for the application of integrated solutions for saving energy and resources in general, but also a center for training and environmental culture, which welcomes visitors by sharing ideas and contents with them, a energetically sustainable farmhouse.

    Alessandro Ronca, whom we reached on the phone, gives us a vision of the problems related to the world of energy that we all think we should reflect on.

    @The Renewable Energy Park

    We see energy only in economic terms - in fact Rocca begins - and this is a limited vision. Since electricity has not served up to now to make us change our vision, in this circumstance this mode could be useful since energy costs have skyrocketed. We have been trying to make people understand the importance of change for 15 years, but so far only the ethical choice has always been "overwhelmed" by economic interest

    The founder and scientific director of the park actually tells us that lately he has been "overwhelmed" by questions, all variables on the same theme "But how can I reduce my consumption?". In other words, unfortunately, only the high cost has turned the spotlight on a problem that has existed for a long time.

    In reality we are obliged to reduce our consumption because if we burn all the oil that remains we are doomed. If nothing else this situation is a accelerator of change

    Clearly there is no universal recipe, we knew it and Ronca also specifies it, but we know that we can't really go on like this. We could not, however, due to environmental problems and now we cannot even for economic reasons. And we could say "We told you so".

    Yes, it's true, completely replacing oil (and other fossil sources) is not currently possible, but only if we continue these consumption methods. Because if these changed, they could. Living without bills is possible, but first of all we must change our habits of use and consumption of energy.

    Can you really live without bills? Alessandro Ronca's challenge in the Renewable Energy Park

    @The Renewable Energy Park

    The starting point is not the economic one [...] If we want to self-produce energy and thus free ourselves from paying someone else who has to supply us with energy and become the protagonists, we cannot find someone who can give an answer to our recipe [... ]. The recipe for energy self-sufficiency is a recipe that we have to prepare ourselves […] We cannot delegate

    Yes alone, with our conscious choices and our lifestyle.

    Thus the Park, where all this is experienced and taught, is not completely off-grid, but almost. The network is in fact used only in an emergency, but the structure works with a smart-grid, self-producing about 95% of the energy it needs, mainly produced by photovoltaics, but also wind power, biomass, thermal composting, thermal solar panels, hot air collectors, and above all "a lot of energy efficiency".

    The main component of this whole story is us […]. We have to get used to living on an energy budget, as we live on an economic budget

    The truth, then, is that we all live above our energetic possibilities and this is really the central knot from which our unsustainability arises.

    Everything starts with us, we can make a difference.
