California has hit the record of 100% renewable energy and shows us that it can be done

Even if only for a few hours, the entire state of California was powered entirely by renewable energy - proving that a sustainable energy future is possible.

We have all heard of the biggest pop music festival that took place in the past few days in California, in the Coachella Valley. A moment in which the most important stars of the music scene of the moment met, making music, launching body positivity slogans (as did the singer Lizzo) or taking sides against the war in Ukraine (as did "our" Måneskin) .

But the Coachella festival was not only important for this: for years in fact this area of California has been at the center of important technological processes that aim to reduce polluting emissions and to give a concrete response to climate change through the use of mass of renewable energy sources, such as the sun and wind.

Just a few days ago the renewable energy sources alone satisfied, for the first time ever, almost 100% of the energy needs of the entire state of California: this was possible thanks to a particular coincidence of wind and sunlight collected by numerous panels placed along Interstate 10, an hour east of Coachella Valley.

More precisely, as explained by the California Independent Power System Operator, last Saturday the renewable energy produced satisfied 99,87% of the state's energy demand. The good news bodes well for environmentalists and scientists, struggling against the clock to reduce (to completely eliminate) dependence on fossil fuels such as gas and oil.

It must be said that California, in recent years, has made great strides in terms of renewable energy. Consider that already in 2015, alternative energy sources satisfied a quarter of the demand of the entire state - a percentage that reached 67% in 2017 and 81 in 2020. Unfortunately, however, part of the state's energy needs are still satisfied by resorting to to natural gas and exploiting the energy produced in nuclear power plants (such as that of Devil's Canyon).

In short, the episode recorded last Saturday is an exception favored by particular weather conditions, but it is still based on an excellent result that goes beyond the weather and which demonstrates how, with perseverance and willpower, results can be achieved. unimaginable until a few years ago.
