Broccoli vs. leukemia. More and more frequently, science identifies the presence of substances located within foods that are capable of carrying out an action to contrast or prevent diseases. A recent study correlated cruciferous trees, with particular reference to broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, to a new chance to fight the leukemia.

Broccoli and crucifers in general contain in fact sulforaphane, a substance that would be capable of kill acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells, without causing damage to healthy cells at the same time. The researchers used concentrated forms of sulforaphane in their experiments, in quantities therefore higher than those normally available in normal broccoli and other cruciferous plants in general.

According to experts, including crucifers in one's diet has beneficial effects, but not in the same way that has been observed in the laboratory. There search in question was conducted by the researchers of the Bayer College of Medicine, in Texas and was published in the pages of the magazine Plos One.

The hope is that further studies conducted by experts can lead to the creation of specific treatments for this particular type of leukemia, which it mainly affects children and that at the moment it can be cured in 80% of cases. The study in question was conducted by Daniel Lacorazza, professor of immunology and pathology.

The experts have decided to turn to sulforaphane as it would be a molecule already known in the field of oncology and considered capable of carrying out a positive action in prevent and fight some types of tumors. Its action has been observed on both healthy and diseased cells taken from patients.

While the non-cancer cells did not suffer any damage in the course of the experiments, the experts observed how sulforaphane may be able to cause cancer cells to die responsible for leukemia. This is a result that allows us to reflect on how precious some foods can be in the treatment and prevention of disease and on how nature is able to offer us what we really need once again, regarding our health.
