Although they look like wooden houses for people, in reality, they are intended for animals and plants. These are the three bizarre pavilions designed for the fauna and flora of the Dutch province of Twente, installed in the landscaped garden of the Provincial Museum of Natural History Natura Docet. The experts from Studio Makkink & Beydi Rooterdam thought about designing them. Each of them plays a specific role in improving the living conditions of local wildlife.

Even if they seem wooden houses for people, in reality, they are intended for animals and plants.

The first structure will be a sort di hotel for bees. It will be used by the local beekeeping association, in order to host a large colony of bees. “The importance of these endangered insects in the food chain and their honey has an educational value for children and adults, because it touches on a topic of global importance,” write the architects.

The chosen vegetation is hops, which reaches up to five meters in height and is able to reduce the populations of parasitic mites in bee colonies. The platform at the top can be reached with a ladder and provides a hive body perspective, where the bees feel comfortable.

The other two will become a living bridge which extends over a small swamp, completely covered with plants, and a indoor habitat, which will house a mixture of herbs, shrubs and a fruit tree capable of attracting insects and acting as a nesting place for birds and other small animals. Humans are kept outside with beams blocking the door.

A path between the museum and the park leads visitors through a diversity of natural and cultivated landscapes. Each of the facilities have their own significance in enhancing the wildlife experience.
