When humans pull up roads, highways and canals, they create artificial barriers that divide animals in their habitats. The consequences are far greater than limiting the mobility of creatures. In the long run they can mean extinction, limiting the limited mating prospects and genetic diversity of a species.

Last year, after a long crusade lasting more than 10 years, forest ranger Gerhard Klesen raised the $ 6 million needed to build a bridge for animals in Schermbeck, Germany. As tempting as it may be, humans cannot use it to make animals feel safe when walking through the facility. People who are caught in the act of crime are met with one fine of almost 50 dollars.

Generally, the creatures are wary of such bridges built near their habitats. As a result, few dare to walk through them for the first year after construction. In the case of the Schermbeck bridge, however, the animals immediately appreciated. After only three days, the deer started the crossings, followed by wild boars, foxes, hares and bats, thanks also to bushes and herbs planted to offer shelter and food.

And it will get better and better for Germany's animals, which it has allocated millions of public funds for build over 100 more animal bridges over the next decade, in order to allow animals a safe method of crossing man-made obstacles.
